This story was submitted during the Glenn Miller Festival 2004. The author agrees to it鈥檚 inclusion on the website.

I was evacuated from Bow, in East London at the age of 6 陆. We were sent to Fingeringhoe in Essex which, given it鈥檚 proximity to the garrison town of Colchester, wasn鈥檛 particularly suitable as a safe venue for children.

Instead we were moved to Strencham in Worcestershire. We had to leave the village school though as it was being used to store carnation milk. Instead we had to be bussed to school in Defford. The school was near the Defford aerodrome which was being used to test radar equipment from Malvern.

I remember one day the school bus got stuck in a snow drift, and the locals had to hastily dig the coach out.
