I was too young to remember the war starting but Carlisle was very fortunate because we had no bombs. We had a few sirens go off but it was never anything serious. One night a German plane was lost over Gretna Green and as he still had a bomb on board, he had to get rid of it. Unfortunately it hit a dance hall in Gretna Green but I cannot remember what the casualty list was. The day the war ended my Father said he was going around Carlisle at night with some of my sisters but said I was too young to go. I pleaded with him and persuaded him to take me and promised to be very good. I think our happiest moment in our family was when my brother returned from Eygpt where he had served in the RAF.
He had been in Basra and moved to other districts but he was in charge of telephone communications for a while. He is still alive today at 84 and in quite good health.
What a shame that we are still at war today.
