Like his Father Bill Eric joined the South Staffordshire Regiment. He was posted to India and Sri Lanka then known as Ceylon where he saw the famous Festival of the Tooth. He sent home presents of embossed leather, silk and embroidery for his mother Betsy and sister Hilda. Upon leaving the army he returned to Alma Street, Heath Town where he met his wife Eileen.
