Staffordshire County Council libraries, on behalf of the author, have submitted this story. The author fully understands the rules and regulations of the People's War website.
I was in the army during the war. I volunteered to join up when I was seventeen. I should have gone to Burma and West Africa but I wasn't old enough so I went down to Aldershot and joined the regiment in France until the end of the war. I got used to the hardships of war....the worst part was having no food....I lost a stone in weight. In Holland we were just in open fields - wet and cold. In Nejmegen, we were in an empty hotel surrounded by woods. I got a two day pass to Ghent in Belgium. When I came back I found that a German bomber had come over and dropped a bomb next to the hotel and blown all the windows out!! Unfortunately, one of my colleagues lost a leg at this time.
