I was a young child in Broomfield when the War broke out. We had a lodger, Michael Nicholson from Ireland and worked at Hoffmans. He used to take me outside when the sirens went, one day we were out and we heard a bomb fell behind Broomfield Church. We ran home and found all the ceilings and had come down and windows blown out.

Food at that time was very scarce so my mother and our next door neighbour would pool their meat ration to make a half decent stew or meat pudding which both families would share.
