I lived in Portsmouth during the war. Being a naval port it was being bombed all the time. When I was 15 in January 1941 a bomb, puported to be the largest bomb dropped on the South Coast, landed on the house next door and burrowed its way underneath our house. Fortunately it failed to explode. My bedroom was over the bomb and it was ticking. We were in the house under the stairs. We evacuated the house, but before leaving I went round the edge of the crater to get to my bedroom to retrieve my money from the mantlepice. If my mother had known she would have gone beserk.
I worked in a bank, which was a protected occupation, because all the men had gone off to war. Aftger work every two weeks I along with my colleague did firewatch duty at the top of the building. We treated it like a game. My colleauge used to wash her hair.
After the war my house was rebuilt and my borther still lives there.
