On May 8, 1945, there was a VE Day Party, and the police came and joined in. We danced, and did the Congo all the way down Holloway Road. Lots of people joined in. The police were waving from their cars as we went by. It was a wonderful day.
My boyfriend had a motorocycle with a sidecar, and we used to drive as far as Southend. During the war, he served in the navy. But just before the war ended, his ship went down. I had already bought all my wedding things. I had to take the news down to his mother, and she said, ‘I lost a son and I lost a good daughter-in-law’.
