Across the open desert sand
our men their mines did lay
the were to halt the German force
they knew would come that way

Then out of the blue there came
a vehicle of their own
the presence of the minefield
no way he could have known

Disaster lay in store they feared
but then to their surprise
he came on then to right and left he veered
and came right through unscathed

They could not believe their eyes
and asked how he had done it
without hesitation or delay
it was the officer in front, he claimed
who led me all the way

But there was no one there they said
there was no one around

Now they took him by the arm
to where upon the ground
and officer lay dead,
killed earlier in the day

But this is the one, he said.

Seems a singularly crass thing to do, to lay a dense unmarked minefield across your planned line of attack.
