My father, Archie, was a pacifist and on our garage door was huge sign saying "I renounce War". At night he would go out distributing pacifist literature. He did this during the battle of Britain. One evening he came back very shaken because someone had chased him from their premises. But the next day the man came round and apologised telling Archie that he had been upset because he had just heard that his son had been reported missing. What has never ceased to amaze me is that we never had any prejudice shown against us because of our father's pacificsm.
