On one occasion we sailed from Saltash and went 100 miles west to avoid being spotted before turning South and heading to Gibraltar in absolute torrential rain, we had ten and a half days at sea before reaching Medalcabur. My CO asked me to spray the beach with small arm fire before we went in. We suffered opposition from German and Italian aircraft whilst landing.

Many people have asked what it felt like---I can鈥檛 tell you---we were sailors doing a job we were trained to do.

We were released from the Royal Navy in 1946; I came home and married the girl next door but one
