John Joseph Campbell MM 1944-1945 Burma

I would like other people to read my fathers story from WW2
he was born in Rose Place off Scotland road
Liverpool one of 11 children he went to St Josephs school and was a member of the junior boxing team
While he was in the 10 glosters he was sent to Burma and what you read next is a true copy of the CITATION he received from the King when he was awarded the MILITARY MEDAL and the story of his Bravery,
IN NE BURMA NOV 44/MAR 45 PTE CAMPBELL
joined the Bn as reinforcement during the advance down the railway corridor and immediatly settled down to the battle conditions
On one occasion when the company was in close proximity to the japanese ,
Private Campbell was no1 on the Bren gun in a patrol that was sent out
About 30 Japenese preparing for a counter attack were encountered about 50-60 yards from the perimiter . The Patrol commander gave the order to withdraw and the enemy followed up
While the patrol was withdrawing Private campbell held off the enemy firing from the hip as he withdrew .
About ten yards away from the perimiter he had exuasted his magazines , and seizing a bren gun which had been dropped by a man who had been killed ,he picked it up and continued firing ,
Despite his wounds this soldier kept on firing his LMG and succeeded in getting back into the perimeter
His courage reliability, and indifference to danger has been most noticable in all actions .

This action resulted in my father recieving the Military Medal for his couragous action
I just want to say that we his eight children the Campbell family are very proud to pass this story on to future generations .my father returned to his family and was very modest about his bravery
