There was a barrage balloon on the arboretum (our local park). It was called ‘Big Bertha’. I was sitting on the grass one day when they were pulling it in, a gust of wind blew it over me and I was very afraid.
Another time there was a storm and my father, who was in the ARP, called me to the top of our entry and told me to look up. I looked and saw a tiny light, then suddenly it was a flaming ball. The air force and army couldn’t pull the barrage balloons in fast enough and they were being struck by lightning — very impressive.
