I have vivid memories of counting large formations of bombers, Lancasters, Halifaxes etc, flying low over the village, usually in the late evening. Double British Summertime helped in this respect. We used to try to count them, but we usually gave up when we reached double figures. The aircraft always looked in pristine condition. The morning after, we would count the stragglers coming back from their night raids. The searchlight battery in the field at the bottom of the garden provided several interesting conversations during the war.
