This story has been added to The People's War Website by CSV Volunteer, Ann Toomey on behalf of the author Joyce Birtles, who understands the site's terms and conditions.
My brother, Edwin Ralph Lynam, was in The Battle of Britain, he received the African Star and Italian Star, also a Defence Medal and the War Medal 1939-45 (the emblem was the oakleaf).
He transported bombs between Suez and Tripoli and then went on to Italy and was often bombed by the Germans. He was also bombed by friendly fire by the Americans.
He had blackouts due to shell shock when he came home. He told us that he was walking in mud up to his knees on Coriano Ridge .
He used to frighten us with the stories of his experiences. He survived the War but was unfortunately killed just after 1946. He is buried on Coriano Ridge in Italy and I visited his grave 8 years ago. It is being very well cared for.
