I was only 16 when I had was called up in Hamburg and my mom was horrified. Although she was pleased that I had to go and fight the British rather than being sent to the Russian Front. She thought I would be safer in England!
I was captured by the British. I was in a camp in Camptown Park. I was then dispatched to Nottingham. I spent about 5 years in the camp - from 1943 to 1948.
Before I went to war I played in the Hamburg Youth Team (HSV) and I lived for football. So when in the camp I played football as much as possible. We played against the officers and other teams in Kent. We had prisoner of war leagues!
