I was 10 the day before war broke out 2nd September 1939.
A lot of children in Kent were evacuated but I didn鈥檛 go until 1940 when I was 11 years old, I went to South Wales. Unfortunately I was there 6 months then my father came to see me and I was ill and had lost 2 stone in just that 6 months. I had a terrible cough so father said 鈥渂ack home to Dover鈥.
When in Wales my younger brother was with me he was 4 years old. My sister lived up the road in good digs, she was 17 months younger than me. Because of lack of food, I was giving the food to my brother. Father had parcels sent up to us but we didn鈥檛 get it, the family had it.
I went back home to Dover where there was bombing and shelling.
I was there for the Battle Of Britain, it was awful. We didn鈥檛 have a door on our shelter. The planes were fighting in the air shooting the barrage balloons down, we could see it all. That was the only time I really screamed in the war 鈥 I was terrified, really petrified.
