"There were rumours of war, the gave me a chance to change my life so I joined the Womens Land Army, very hard work but I felt I was doing something for my country. A part of my life I would not have missed out for all the world and made so many friends, you had to have, to of gone through that time to realise the friendship that was throughout the country. It is so sorry, why the world can't be the same now as it was then, or are we asking a bit too much. There so much trouble in the world now. From leaving the W.L.A. to getting married which was 21st May, 1945, at 2:30p.m. at St. Giles Church, Durham. The memories of my wedding are still very close in my mind it was whit weekend, which was Monday we went to Scarbrough for our honeymoon on the Tuesday for 4 days returning home to live with my mother-in-law and father-in-law, and we did so for nine-and-half-years, before we had a home of our own that was another part of my life which was very mixed, but I wouldn't have changed it for the world my mother-in-law and I got on so well."
Stanley Robson, 85
How old were you when you went to war?
"I was 20 years old and it was 1940 when I joined."
Did you fought in Europe or the far East?
"I fought in Europe - Normandy the 3rd Wave"
Did you join up at the same time as your friends?
"Two friends and myself joined together"
Were you decorated?
Yes. I four service medals:
1939-45 Service Medal
Defence Medal
2 Service Stars; 1939-45 France and Germany
Were you a prisoner of war?
"No."
How often did you get home - leave?
"I had no home leave for four-and-a-half-years.
After the war how long did it take you to be demobed?
"I was wounded and already back in England in hospital. After been wounded by a land mine whilst in Germany."
What did you do after the war?
I worked in the pits and had various jobs afterwards.
What was the food like?
We were on rashings, mostly bully beef (Corned Beef).
Where were you on VE Day?
"Still in hospital but there was still loads of excitement of VE Day, as people were happy that the war was over?"
