Mrs Lloyd recalled her experiences of the war to Oliver Jones and Alex Owen in an interview conducted for a school History project.
During the War I was training to be a nurse at Alder Hey hospital in Liverpool. I went to work there at the start of 1942. I had previously been working in an office in a small brewery in Burtonwood. By that time (1942)the bombing of Liverpool had ended. While I was there forces that had been at Dunkirk were in the hospital recovering from their injuries. They took up half of the hospital. They had their own nurses so I didn't get to nurse any of the soldiers. I was caring for the children in the hospital.
I remember being very concerned about my brother who had been taken prisoner by the Germans. He was in Dunkirk at first, then he served out in Egypt and later he was sent to the Greek Isles. It was here that he was taken prisoner. He wasn't released until after the War had ended in 1945. On his return he told me a little about his experiences as a prisoner of war. On one occasion he and some other prisoners had caught the German soldier's guard dog and ate it as they were so hungry.
I was on duty the night that peace was declared and I remember feeling fed up that I had to work and miss out on the celebrations. After the War my boyfriend came home and we got married at the end of 1945. He had first served in Egypt and I met him when he was on leave before going out to India.
