WAITING IN THE BAR FOR THE WAR TO END
Naval Base — Alan Ross
Waiting in the bar for the war to end. Those who for the second time, saw it begin and charting the future watched death crawling; like a lizard over the lidless eyes of the sun, and the leprous faces of the coast being eaten away by the sea. The glass shows them now, the face and features that they find appalling. Reflections of launches move across the mirror. Destroyers and Corvettes swinging round buoys Sweepers at anchor, but here the voyages begin and end. Stories which they hear like keepers of lightships, as they wait for news of friends. The same routine, continuing the war until it ends.
This story was submitted to the People's War site by June Woodhouse (volunteer) of the CSV Action Desk at ´óÏó´«Ã½ Hereford and Worcester on behalf of Alan Ross (author) and has been added to the site with his permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.
