We were living in Bexley in Kent during the war and, although we suffered a lot of bombing, there is one day in particular that has stayed in my mind over the years.
I had been shopping with my young son when the sirens sounded. I hurried home and brought the pram into the house and placed it under the stairs.
Before I could close the door a doodlebug fell. The blast threw a lady who was walking on the other side of the road right through the doorway and she landed on the floor. After a minute or two I plucked up the courage to touch her on the shoulder. She raised her head and turned and smiled at me.
Had the door been closed she would have been killed or seriously injured. What a lucky escape!!
