A German Fighter aircraft fired cannon into the Foresters Cottages, Caldecott, Rutland early in the war. One of the bullets went through the roof and bed in Walter Stokes‘ house, narrowly missing him as he climbed the stairs after finishing his night-shift with Stuart and Lloyds. At the time, David Keightley and I were looking after 12-14 of Hutchie Hunt’s cows who were grazing on the side of the Caldecott - Lyddington road when we heard the aircraft firing over Caldecott which then came toward us, following the railway line towards Harringworth and Stamford. We both jumped into the ditch not to be seen by the plane. When it passed by the side of us, we got the cows back together who carried on grazing. Later I understand the plane was shot down before reaching Stamford.
