I lived in Silsden during the war, where I worked in the local munitions factory, having moved from working in the winding mills in Silsden. I vividly remember the shift patterns, having to work two weeks on and two weeks off. Although, the worst restriction on my everyday life definitely had to be the rationing, not being able to buy food or clothes. We did have relatives however, who lived on a farm and who would provide us with bits of extra ham, eggs and butter. I also remember going into Leeds one day and getting caught up in the nightly air raids. I ended up in the shelters and never got undressed the entire time.
My mother worked as a weaver and my father worked at the Rolls Royce factory in barnoldswick. Neither of my brothers joined the army until 1943, due to their age.
