My grandfather was a junior surgeon in the middle of his training when the war started. he was based at Portsmouth caring for submarine personell when they returned to base. He then went up to Cambridge to do further training at Addenbrokes Hospital where he enlisted in the Home Guard and took part in firewatching and patrols around Cherry Hinton Reservoir, sleeping in a farmer's barn, the 'coldest nights I have ever spent' he tells me! He stayed in the Navy after the war for a time and got married onm New Years Eve 1950 to Elizabeth Lake, a nurse who had served in the WAAF from 1941-45 near Exeter at an RAF station. My grandmother was in the Ops room, working on the plotting table used to indicate when the raids were coming in and directing RAF fighters to intercept. My grandfather got married in his Naval uniform and cut the small wedding cake with his ceremonial sword.
Both grandparents are very modest about what they achieved in serving their country but I belive we shall remain in their debt forever.
Mu paternal Grandfather, Montague Malleson, having qualified as a dentist before the war was commisioned into the RAF to check pilots and groundcrew's teeth. He served from 1940-45. he died in 1991. Rest In Peace and to all others who have died serving their country.
