I was 17 when war was declared and living with my mum and dad in Waterhouse Way, Regents Park, Southampton. One brother had been called up for the army; the other was in charge of the A.R.P. at Kings Park Terrace.
The air raid shelter was in the ground but hadn鈥檛 been covered in earth as instructed. I don鈥檛 remember the date of then first raid, but the sirens sounded and the White House garage was bombed. It was just down the road from us. A shop in Regents Park Road was hit, and also part of the tobacco factory.
The next day people went to see where the bombs had dropped. I believe this was one of the first times Southampton was bombed in WWII.
