At the outbreak of war I was still at school. We had evacuees staying with us, and after Dunkirk, three soldiers from a Scottish regiment billeted on us. They only had their rifles and a change of socks and pants. My mother insisted after a couple of days to wash their shirts. They were hanging on the line dripping wet (no washing machines of course) when there was a knock at the door telling them to report to Bedford Market Square in an hour's time. We were all trying to dry the shirts in front of electric fires, but they went off steaming.
The 大象传媒 was evacuated to Bedford, and Sir Adrian Boult, leader of the Symphony Orchestra the other. One day his dog got in our meat safe, and I saw him dragging out a leg of lamb up the passage. We had saved our meat coupons for ages for it!
In October 1943, on joining the WRNS, I was to report to Tallychewan in Scotland. Due to a dysentry outbreak, I was re-routed to Headingley Methodist College in Leeds. Here begineth another story!
