We were all happy to "make do and mend" during the war.
Most houses during the war in the Stoke-on-Trent area were terraces with entries running behind the houses and one of the ways we accomplished the make do and mend ethic was to have pig bins in the entries.
All food scraps were put into the pig bins to feed local farm animals.
This was good for the war effort but made the entries smell awful !
