When the war started I was 13 years old, and attended Park Senior School,Which has just been demolished. Something the air-raids failed to do. Schools were immediately closed for a period of time,to sort out various precautions. Tempory classes were held in pupils houses for a period of time. I left school in March 1940. For 2 years,I worked for Tom S.Fords shop in Park View Whitley Bay.One of my first tasks ,every morning and at closing time, was to remove and replace the wood shutters to protect the windows. Other tasks were to mend bicycle tyre punctures and other maintenance, charging accumulators, alot wireless sets were battery operated,Ialso helped, serving in the shop.At the age of 15 I also did fire watching, once a week. When I was 16,I started my apprenticeship at the Naval Yard Walker on Tyne, but thats another story.
