On the days after D-Day, or maybe, leading up to that day, I well remember standing in Walton High Street (next to Felixstowe) watching the troops parading along the streets. There was every kind of vehicle including D.K.W.S. (Called Ducks). The main point to this story is that the soldiers were throwing out pennies to the small children like me to collect. My mates and I scampered after the coins as they ran along the gutters. After going home I put them in an envelope and drew a picture of tanks etc ont eh front, and the date on the back. I believe there was about 17d in various coins. When I was about seventeen I found this envelope. I opened it and spent the money. I have often wondered if any of those men returned to England in one piece and regret not keeping that little bit of history.
