In 1939 my family lived in Tooting S.W. London. I had married in 1938 and moved to Sutton. I still live in the same house. We were bombed in 1943 so I went to live in Alton, Hants with my husband's Aunt, a red cross nurse, who died soon after the war ended. I had my 1st baby 3 days AFTER my husband joined the RASC and he was sent to N.Africa & Italy for 3 years, so he didn't see his little girl until she was 3 years old at the end of the war. I was taken to Epsom Hospital in a fish van straight from Billingsgate as all ambulances were busy with the wounded troups. I entered her in a Best Baby contest at Alton and she won after being bombed out of her pram under the stairs in the London Borough of Sutton! After my house was repaired I returned with my baby from Alton.
My husband and I wrote letters to each other every day - some of his mates got NONE!
I loved it in the country that summer with the baby in the pram, which I took with me everywhere.
