I went through to Normandy on Atlantic convoys and after that my ship sailed out to the far east, to Bombay. I was on the troop ship and we took the troops down to a port near where the Japanese were fighting, down at the front. We took the Gurhkas from Singapore. Such fine fighting men. We don't have many of them left now. Every one from the Red Cross was so kind too.
I saw ships go down and oil tankers. Being an island, here, we needed the Merchant Navy and all the convoys in the atlantic to come over. Otherwise we'd have no food.
We lost so many ships at see that it became very dangerous.
My family were in the Blitz in East London. All the way through. They helped one another. After all night bombing people still got up the next morning and went to work. They were very brave people.
I had friends that were blown up. There were many who were completely forgotten though and the merchant navy should be recognised more for what they did. They really are the forgotten service.
My wife went right through the bombing. I told her I'd bring her back some silk stockings. And when I got back that was the first thing she asked me for!
