Dad (Ernest Knowles) was a miner at Wheal Jane and other mines. We were living in Burnwithian in st Day near the school. Dad built an underground air raid shelter in grandad's field next door to where we lived we used to shout to grandad to come up when there was bombing over Falmouth.

Inside we'd have a primus stove, tea pot and kettle and flask. It was dark inside and we couldn't shine any lights. We'd put up a plece of plywood over the house windows to keep the light out.

The shelter held about six of us. As a child it was very scary I was only about 3 or 4 but I remember it well.

The shelter is all grown over now. In the house we had a walk in cupboard under the stairs. We'd go in there if we couldn't get outside in time. That wasn't very nice either.

We'd see all the flames following the bombing over Falmouth.
