When the war started I was ten years old and we lived in South East London. My parents took my sister and I to live in Seasalter in Kent where our friends had a spare bungalow. One of my strongest memories is of swimming in the sea with my mother and seeing planes flying overhead. We waved to the planes and my mother shouted 'good luck boys' as she always did, only to discover later that they were german planes on their way to bomb Ramsgate.
While we were away my father stayed in London during the week where he worked for the gas board and came to visit us at week ends when ever he could. In London we had always had rented accomodation but had to give it up when we went to Seasalter, so my dad was living with my Uncle Len.
Dad and my uncle arrived home one evening to discover that a bomb had landed not far from the house. The force of the explosion had sent a tree flying into their garden and Uncle Len said to my dad that Leta his wife had always wanted a Cherry tree in the garden and now she had one!
