In 1940, during a German Air Raid on London Docks, we took cover in our Anderson Air Raid Shelter in our back garden. After we had been there a while, we heard voices shouting. My dad and myself (i was 10) got out of the shelter and saw people shouting and throwing stones at the lights around West Ham stadium. These lights were all on, making a lovely land mark for the German planes.
People were bashing on the main gate, which was eventually opened by a uniformed security guard who then said, "What's the matter me boys?".
He was Irish, and the people shouted "IRA. string him up to the lampost."
The poor chap slammed the door and switched the lights off.
