I was 5 years old when the war started and i lived in london mith my parents and baby brother teddy ,and when the bombing got so bad and buldings were being hit all around us my father who was a fireman amidst all this told me that i and my mother and baby brother were being evacuated to wiltshire.and
to me it was a big adventure and the morning we climbed aboard the big red bus.which took us to the station to get the train and another bus which took us to the farm
on arrival at a farm near wootton basset we were given one large room with a double bed and cot in and it had a open fire ,which my mother had to cook on.
we went into swindon once a week on a bus that ran twice in the morning going and twice coming home in the evening.my mother found it very depressing after living in london and catching a tram every 3 mins .and she was asked to scrubb the milking barn which she did every day for a pint of milk from the farmer .when the war was over we did not go back to london but went to live in a town in middlesex (which mum found very modern and up to date ) I remember the queing up for eveything and anything and the ration books and only allowed 2ozs of sweets a week and our main source of meals was from
the fish and chip shop.but my lasting memory was the street party after peace was declared and my dad made a dummies of hitler and mussolini to put on the biggest bonfire i had ever seen and everyone was singing and dancing and that went on all night long .i am 70 years old but those meemories will always stay with me
