On 1st September 1939 I was evacuated to Carlisle. I only stayed one month as I was very unhappy. I returned to Newcastle and attended school half days, as most teachers were away. In 1940 I left school and started work, and the day I was 17 and a half I volunteered for the forces, and in 1942 I was in the ATS in which I served for 4 years. I was stationed in various places working as a typist with differenct regiments. It was a very strict life and towards the end of the war I was preparing vouchers from units requestiong MT spares for all types of transport e.g. tanks and armoured vehicles. In our section we had Italian and German POW's. They also did some of the tasks which we did. However, we were not allowed to "Fraternise."
I did make some nice friends from different places in England and even Bermuda! I was demobbed in May 1946.
A few months ago I read in the local evening paper that a lady living in california was searching for me! What a coincidence. We had been together more than 60 years ago. Needless to say I contacted her and now we keep in regular contact. A nice ending to be remembered with happy memories. As well as some very sad and tragic events during world war two.
