In 1944 I was in the WRAF and coming back off leave at Tamworth station. In the blackout a friend and I got on the wrong train that eventually pulled into a siding. We were horrified and signalled with our cigarette lighters as the engine pulled away. We cornered our driver and he said he couldn鈥檛 return us without a guardsvan.
We went back to Nuneaton and set off walking. After about two miles we saw the local bus 鈥楳onty鈥檚鈥 parked up and since we could both drive we thought, 鈥淥h, b it, let鈥檚 borrow the bus.鈥
So we drove back to camp in style 鈥 parked up a few yards short of the guardroom and as usual snipped the barbed wire fence with our pliers that we always carried in our bags.
The next morning all the camp was wondering where the people who came in on the bus were. One man said, when the sergeant didn鈥檛 arrive 鈥淚t must be his wedding anniversary!鈥
