My time as an evacuee started a little after September 1939, when I boarded a train with 21 other children from the Vauxhall area.
We were taken to Edstaston in the countryside and stayed at a private house. There was me and my two brothers, and my mum came along as a helper. We were then directed to a place called Coton. We went to Coton Hall, Whixall, Whitchurch, Salop, with a Lord and Lady Hill. We stayed in the rooms of the Mansion, and there were servants, maids and a housekeeper. There were acres of land and there was a large car. Mum had gone to help another family but would visit us at the mansion. I can remember spending Christmas there; there was lots of food, and things we hadn鈥檛 had before. The Lord and Lady had a son called Captain Clegg Hill who was in the forces.
Dad missed us very much and wanted everyone home. Lord and Lady Hill drove down our street, didn鈥檛 stop, but just waved. We spent the rest of the war at home in Liverpool.
