I recall that when I was 12/13 years old, Mother and Father managed The Grand Hotel Vaults in the town. It was Christmas day morning and they told me and my friend to go around the town and see if there were any lonely GIs who would like to join us for Christmas lunch. We did our job properly and duly arrived back with two Americans.
They were nice guys and became regular visitors. After that we were never short of candy and chewing gum.
Some time later, my dog died and one of the Americans ( I remember his name was Leo) turned up one day not long after with a replacement 'Heinz 57' type.
They certainly knew how to win friends!
