* I am not sure of the date

The Air Raid warnings were sounding. But I was asleep. The Germans were over Tyneside and bombing the shipyards.

All my family had taken refuge in the corrogated shelter which had been built in our back garde. In the background could be heard the explosions (but I didn't wake up). My Gran and Grandad, Aunt and Uncle, Mum and Dad, Sisters and cousins, along with my Uncle were all squeezed into the shelter. Not much room for laying down to sleep. But sleep I did.

A short while later it suddenly occurred to my Mother that I was very quiet and she asked "Where's Freddie?" Upon which my Dad jumped up and ran into the house, up the stairs and into the small bedroom. He grabbed me and ran back down to the shelter. Everyone was ecstatic and shouting my name. Fancy waking me up to endure all that noise!
