This story was submitted to the People's War website by Plymouth Library Services on behalf of Rhoda Bowden (nee Fox). The author fully understands the terms and conditions of the website.

My sister Marg and me worked together in Devonport Dockyard. We were Burners in Dockyard Number 1. Marg was Number 1 Burner.

When people worked on their first day in the dockyard, they were teased. If someone wanted a cup of tea, they were sent to Crane Number 51 to ask for a "fanny", which was a nickname for a pot to boil water in.

To get to the dockyard, we had to catch the bus at 6.30 in the morning. The bus was full to capacity, and we had to stand or sit in the stairs. But we had to laugh as it was always "room for one more."
