The Band Wagon - San Lorenzo, July 1945. Front, second from left: Hubert White - with saxaphone and clarinet
My cousin, Hubert White, sent me these pictures from the Italian campaign, San Lorenzo in July 1945. He was in the Royal Artillery company and had been called up late in the war, at the age of 40.
His great love was music. He took his saxaphone with him and played it when ever he had a chance for a breather. He also played the clarinet. Along with other boys from his regiment, he formed the "Blue Shadows Octet".
Hubert wrote: "The Band wagon rattles around like Jan Pearce's gray mare at 2am en route for home with one piano, one double bass, a dozen instruments and ten tired men aboard. Small wonder that on one occasion a military policeman suggested we were overloaded!"
