Aileen Hodgson - WREN

My mother joined up with the Wrens; she was a cook by training and so she was taken on in that capacity. There was a choice between the land army and the navy and she opted for the navy: there was a shortage of men in the navy and she was drafted on board one of the naval training craft - training naval officers in navigation and seamanship generally and going between Liverpool and Belfast. However, it is quite difficult to get information about the deployment of Wrens on board naval craft so little is known. There is a photograph and it is now appended to this description of her activities.

Message 1 - Wren at Sea

Posted on: 30 November 2005 by Audrey Lewis - WW2 Site Helper

Dear Cambsaction,
I am intriqued by your story about Aileen. I did not know Wrens served on board ships during WW2.
(I my self served with the WRNS after WW2.) Please keep me in touch if you find out more. It must be told!
Kindest regards,
Audrey Lewis
