' I rember the blackouts, you wernt allowed a light on with out a curtain up to black it out incase it would shine on the street. I rember I was working untill 9 o'clock and i had arrangments made to go out afterwards, so I had to rush home and their was no one home at the time so there was no curtains pulled and I put on a light and there was a knock on the door, it was the police and the pulled me up for not having a curtain up and for showing light so I was going to be fined but I was only 17 or 18 a the time. My father worked at the dock's and my mother never worked she just stayed at home. Every weekend you were away accross the border to smuggle up butter, you got anything that you could get without coupons. My other always went up to the freestate to get meat for the dinner. You would wear big coats and the ladies would search the girls I rember getting caught with eggs and the took them off me and I had to do with out. I rember the americans comeing over, the american's were good fun and always treated you well, they use to run dances when they came over and they always wore their uniform, they livened up the town and the dance halls.'
