As a young boy it was with great excitement that I watched the Airfield at Boxted being built. Would we get bombers or fighters? RAF or Americans?

I well recall seeing the day that the USAAF B26 Martin Marauders of the 386 BG arrived.

It was a warm day and they flew very low around the landing lights on the edge of Bullock Wood we waved at the pilots. Jumping up on a bank in Green Lane to get a better view it gave way and I cut my leg on barbed wire. On the ground they were different to anything we鈥檇 seen with their Tricycle Undercarriage.

From that point on we were luck to be able to watch all that was going on the base from Langham Lane where many of the aircraft were parked
