In 1942 my Dad, Steve Nichols, was an engineer working at Blackburn's Aircraft Company at Brough. He travelled daily by train from Leeds to Brough a journey which was often delayed due to enemy action.
The factory was on the Humber estuary and had large metal gates on the entrance which faced the river. One evening Dad was about to go out of the gate when he was called back by the watchman on duty. Just at that moment a German aircraft came up the river and strafted the gates - had my Dad not been called back he would have been killed, and I would not alive to tell the story as I was born in 1944!
