We were growing to love this family we had acquired.A Mutual fond relationship was developing. They were rearing us as their own
I recall xmas times so vividly.Christmas carolling was calling at the houses and giving our rendering of a few carols and then afterwards being invited inside to sing, which was then rewarded with some sweetmeats. How we went around in the darkness still surprises me.On xmas eve we would hang up our stockings;one for Mrs Cook, the cat and then our own.The excitement now mounting! On waking we eagerly claimed our foll stocking at the end of the bed.The contents consisting of an apple,an orange, books and a paintbox.Iwould content myself with reading and painting all day. Those were very happy memories of such times. We appreciated everything and fully indulged ourselves all day.The poultry would be either duck or goose with all the trimmings. We devoured the meal with great relish,as Iloved my food.Although Iwas very small for my age. I ate everything and always had room for second helpings.Despite my dislike of vegetables, cheese and milk at first, I soon acquired a taste for almost anything except cheese! In fact quite greedy.
Within a short span of time, I soon picked up the famous `Soomerzet`accent and passed as one of those`country` girls quite quickly.I did wonder why I was addressed as `me son` considering I was a girl! Pretty soon I became very fluent in this language and spoke well!(later in London I was accused of speaking (posh).I was now sworn in and quite happy and content in my new role.I rolled my `R`s and broadened my words admirably and held my own with all the local girls. Now I had become a fully fledged villager.
