I was 6 on outbreak of the war. My parents kept the Hare and Hounds at the time which was frequented by Airforce Personnel. We could not open every day due to the shortage of beer. I can remember the sing-songs round the piano.
The pub and Church railings were taken for the scrap metal.
We had to contribute 6pence per week to help buy a Spitfire. After collecting 15/- you got a savings certificate which I think had tobe in for 5 years.
To encourage the children to save they brought a mock battleship built on the back of a lorry which we used to climb all over.
On the Arnhem raid the paratroopers were in gliders and planes and the sky was full as far as the eye could see.
The Americans had Flying Fortresses and we used to walk down to them and ask if they had any gum or lifesavers which were like a polo sweet.
One American wanted to taste pheasant and he took us with him and was shooting at pheasants with his sten gun.
I can remember the shelter being dug on the Village Green.
