I was a small child during the Second World War and lived on Queens Drive, West Derby, Liverpool. My Mum and I used to walk along Queens Drive to visit my grandparents at least twice every week. Although there had been an air raid one night we still went to see my grandparents the next day. On the way we saw two adjoining houses had been bombed, a direct hit I think it was called. I remember mounds of bricks and broken furniture all over the pavement and road but what fascinated me was this pretty taffeta material half buried in the rubble, probably somebody's dance dress. I was most upset about that; I had no thoughts of the families who may have been killed that night, not until I was grown up. After the war those houses were rebuilt and there was no sign of any bombing. My family was lucky, we heard the air raids but we never came to any harm.
