I was 4 and half years old when World War Two started. My first memory was the talk of men being 'called up' My Uncle Walter (my father's yougest brother age 27) whom I dealy loved went into the army early on, before he was 'called up'. I remember being heartbroken at him going away and terrified that my dad would also go away and leave us. We were a very close knit working class family. Fortunately (or unfortunately) after several bouts of lobar pneumonia which left a slight lung efect so he was not A1, also the fact that he was a train driver and in a 'reserved occucpation' he was exempt.
