Aged 15, Lily Russ worked at a former corset making factory making parachutes as part of the war effort.
Returning to work one afternoon, she was walking up Hillside Road, St. George when she saw and heard a German aeroplane strafing streets close by. Suddenly, she felt someone leap on her, throw her to the ground and cover her with his body. It was her father, Henry, also returning to work. Seeing the danger Lily was in, he had jumped from his bike and protected her from the machine gun bullets that were now peppering the pavement where they were lying. Thankfully, they were not injured in any way, although Lily's nerves suffered from the shock, and the plane went on its way to add to the carnage and destruction that took place in the Bristol Blitz.
